(from the section of notes on the Amis de L'ABC chapter, regarding Courfeyrac)
***
Courfeyrac: (in his house. He is humming.) Today is the most beautiful day... (to Azelma) hand me my cravat. ...In the world. For Riding... What do you think of this knot, hm? ... over the earth and waves. There, my cravat is perfect. I beseech a kiss." (he says 'kiss' in English.)
Azelma: What is that then, a 'kiss'?
Courfeyrac: It's un basier.
Azelma: I don't like it when folks talk Latin at me.
Courfeyrac: It's English.
Azelma: (formally) So you saw an English girl last night?
Courfeyrac: Me, last night! I've sounded the hunting horn!
Azelma: Liar! Here's your 'kiss'.
(She presents her forehead to him.)
Courfeyrac: On the forehead?
Azelma: Nothing more.
Courfeyrac: It's a quarrel, then?
Azelma: That depends. Where did you go last night?
